The Northumbria University MSPL, PGR Conference Committee would like to invite you to attend the 5th Biennial Modern Studies in Property Law Postgraduate Conference at Northumbria Law School, Newcastle upon Tyne on Friday 17th April 2020. It will be closely linked to the main conference and will provide a unique opportunity for current research students and recent graduates in property law or with a property component to attend talks, including from Professor Nicholas Hopkins, the Law Commissioner for property, family and trust law (further details to be announced) as well as to present your work, receive feedback, participate and make long-term contacts in your research area (see main conference website).

About our speaker: Professor Hopkins was appointed as Law Commissioner for property, family and trust law on 1 October 2015. In addition to his responsibilities as Law Commissioner he is Chair of the editorial board of Modern Studies in Property Law. As Law Commissioner, Professor Hopkins has overseen reform projects concerning land registration and charities law, and current projects include providing a modern framework for disposing of the dead.

Speaking/presenting: as an attendees you can present your work on research into property-related issues in a diverse range of formats:

  • Short papers in Pecha Kucha-style format, for concise, visually oriented presentations. The format uses 20 timed slides with no option to skip ahead, requiring speakers to think carefully how to break down their research into its most pertinent and impactful elements. In a slight modification of the format, slides will run for 30 seconds for a presentation time of 10 minutes with 10 minutes for questions and feedback.

  • Standard papers of 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions and feedback.

  • Posters (A1) presented in the main conference hub area with a 30 minute poster presentation session

  • Feedback forms to be provided to encourage attendees to give as much feedback on formal presentations as possible which presenters may take away

Please email abstracts for papers/posters to la.mspl@northumbria.ac.uk by February 28th 2020 for papers and  for posters.

Participation: this conference provides for varied opportunities for you to participate before, during and after the conference itself to help you interact and build contacts with PGRs in your research area:

  • Flyer board in main conference area with abstracts of all the papers and space for feedback by post-it note

  • Flyer board in main conference area for mini A5 mini-posters, mini-bios, contact information or research-abstracts for those not presenting - simply bring your mini-poster and pin to the board in the main conference area
